Facility FAQs

What is the size of your fields?
Portland Sports Complex has an open FieldTurf surface measuring approximately 230'x 160' that can be used as a large single field, two half fields or divided into three cross fields. A custom designed drop down sports curtain allows this separation. Our facility has NO DASHER BOARDS and offers the best playing surface in the industry! The clear span (no center posts) playing area has 62' +/- ceilings with no obstructions or ceiling nets. Custom designed Musco Sports Lighting illuminates the field house.

What is the surface on your field?
Our surface is covered with FieldTurf. FieldTurf is a revolutionary synthetic turf, designed to duplicate the playing conditions of real grass. FieldTurf surfaces deliver optimal performance and provide ideal playing conditions all year long. FieldTurf fibers are made from a polyethylene and polypropylene blend, treated and tufted into a unique porous surface backing. Specially engineered equipment places each individual grass fiber in a pattern that emulates real grass. The patented hybrid fiber is strong, smooth, soft, and forgiving.

The infill is made from graded silica sand and ground rubber and surrounds each FieldTurf fiber like natural earth holds a blade of grass. The infill provides a non-compactable, resilient, natural earth feel. The interaction between the synthetic grass fibers and the patented ground rubber and silica sand infill system delivers the ultimate footing for all athletes. It looks like grass, feels like grass and plays like grass.

What is the size of your facility?
Portland Sports Complex is over 50,000 square feet. The field house is more than 45,000 square feet offering the best playing surface in the region. The field house is adjacent to Frozen Rope?s Baseball Training Center and Joker?s Fun & Games.

The field house has handicapped accessible bathrooms and large changing rooms. The adjoining temporary administrative building provides administrative offices and a large open vestibule entrance area. Also adjoining the building is "Turf's", a sports pub & restaurant featuring multiple TV's (including a 9' wide screen!), great food and beverages, and incredible mezzanine viewing.

What is the hourly rate for your fields?
The Portland Sports Complex offers competitive hourly pricing and delivers a better quality-designed facility with the player in mind.

  • Full Field A - $300 per hour
  • Half Field B or C - $185 per hour
  • Split Fields D-F - $125 per hour

How is the field separated?
Because we wanted to offer the most realistic playing experience in the seacoast region, we have specially designed this facility from the "Player Up". We DO NOT have any dasher boards separating our fields. Specially engineered drop down sports curtain and netting is secured in the 62' high galvanized steel rafters providing a solid, yet flexible dividing mechanism. The netting is not intended to be 'played off of', yet offers versatility while providing optimum indoor performance. Painted touchlines surround the perimeter of the field allowing an official out-of-bounds territory. This netting also allows us the flexibility to change field specifications to accommodate a variety of other needs, including tournament play and clinic training.

Can you help me find a team to play on?
The Portland Sports Complex website hosts a Player's Bulletin Board where players can post their desire to play on a team or a team can post their need for a player. This can be easily accessed through your online connection and can be updated by us once your needs are fulfilled. Please drop us an email if you find what you are looking for so we can remove your request from the website. With your permission, we can also give individual players who are looking for a team, your contact information.

Is there practice time available?
Due to the extreme popularity of the indoor sports season, practice time has limited availability October through May to off-peak hours, consisting primarily during the weekdays and some early mornings and late evenings. Additional practice times may become available but times may vary. We encourage you to call for availability.

Field rates for practice sessions during off-peak hours are discounted. Advanced scheduling and prepayment is required for all practice field requests. Field rental fees are non-refundable. If you must cancel your commitment and do it within 30-days of the scheduled field rental, we will issue you a facility credit only if we can fill your slot, less a $100 cancellation fee. If we cannot fill your slot, there will be no credit issued and your entire fee is forfeited. A written, dated cancellation notice is required and can be dropped off at the facility or faxed to 207-878-0866.

Please call for more information on off-peak field rental rates.

Portland Sports Complex reserves the right to change field rental rates and availability without notice.

What sessions are available for playing soccer, field hockey or lacrosse?
The season is divided into five 8-week sessions and offers playing time for each sport. All sessions offer 7 weeks of league play and 1 week for playoffs, unless otherwise noted. Typically, something is awarded to the league playoff champions for each division in divisions that have a minimum of four teams only. Some sessions do not offer every sport. It depends on the demand during that session.

Occasionally, 6-week sessions may be offered. Portland Sports Complex reserves the right to alter award distribution and the term of the session schedule if necessary, without notice.

*Some sessions may seem slightly longer in the schedule to make up for games that will not be scheduled due to facility closure on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day and Easter Sunday.

The session dates are as follows:

  • Session I: September - October
  • Session II: November - December
  • Session III: January - February
  • Session IV: March - April
  • Session V: May - June
Please call 207-878-0865 or email us at info@portlandsportscomplex.com for schedule details and availability.

How much does it cost to register a team?
Team registration varies by age level and specific field assignment. With a roster of 14-15 players playing an 8-week session on Half Field B or C, the average cost per player is about $48-$56.

Please call for league fees or check online. Each team is required to have matching team shirts. In many cases, a business will sponsor the cost of these items as well as the team registration fee. It is the team's responsibility to solicit this sponsorship, if desired. Another option is to have a company sponsor half the costs associated and the team members pay the other half.

Referees will officiate each game and be paid for and provided by Portland Sports Complex. Although Portland Sports Complex makes every effort to secure qualified referees for every game, we DO NOT guarantee it. Occasionally, something may happen beyond our control and we may have to improvise. Portland Sports Complex DOES NOT issue any sort of credit to any team or individual for unofficiated games.

What is the cancellation policy at Portland Sports Complex?
A $100 deposit is required at the time of registration and is non-refundable. In the event you need to cancel your team registration, we will issue you a credit to be used for another session as long as we have a 14-day notice, less a $20 processing fee. We will waive the processing fee if we cannot put you in the league you registered for and we must collapse that division for any reason. If you cancel within 14 days of the session's first scheduled game and we cannot fill your slot, then there will be no credit issued and your deposit is forfeited. A written, dated cancellation notice is required and can be dropped off at the facility, mailed, or faxed to 207-878-0866. Emailed cancellations are not accepted. If you choose to fax a cancellation, it is your responsibility to call us to confirm receipt of the fax.

The balance of your team registration fee, individual Participant Registration & Waiver Forms for each member and a completed Team Roster is due on or before the first scheduled game of the desired session. If full payment is not received on or before the start of the first scheduled game, your team may be assessed a $25 late registration fee. If full payment is not received before the second game, your team will not be allowed to play until payment is received in full, including the late fee. Portland Sports Complex will no longer waive this fee under any circumstances. Premier Clubs must have their team fees paid in full on or before the first scheduled game in the session. If a premier club registers multiple teams and requires an invoice, it is the clubs responsibility to inform us so we may print one in a timely manner to assist getting a check cut from your club prior to the first scheduled game.

However, we DO NOT encourage players to travel if they feel the road conditions are unsafe. It is the decision of the team or its individual players to decide whether or not to play. It is also the responsibility of the team manager or individual players to find out if we have closed the facility. PLEASE check our website first before calling to assist in efficient communication.

If the Portland Sports Complex closes due to inclement weather, a news bulletin will be posted immediately on the home page of our website. We will also leave a message on our answering service at the facility (207-878-0865).

If a cancellation does occur due to weather, there will be NO make up games, make up clinics, or make up training sessions scheduled.
[top]

How many players play on the field at one time?
These numbers vary according to the field size and league, as well as the division. Please call the facility for more details on this. Occasionally, Portland Sports Complex does allow some discretionary alterations to these numbers if both team managers/coaches agree.
[top]

If I want to coach a premier team, what kind of license do I need?
Registration of premier level teams requires a certified trained coach with at least a valid E license from the State of Maine. Portland Sports Complex will schedule coaches licensing clinics for soccer, field hockey and lacrosse throughout the year.

Can I register my team for more than one session at a time?
If your team is registered in the first session of the season then you will have first right of refusal for the following sessions thereafter, so long as you don't miss any sessions in between.

All of our registration is a first come first serve basis. Registration for each scheduled session ends 3 days prior to the start of the first game in the first week. If prepayment is received at the time of registration and you were in a previous session in the current season, your team slot is guaranteed.

If your team chooses not to register early, you will have up to the fourth game in the current session you are playing in to secure your slot for the next session. If you do not register by that time, your name goes on a list and as slots become available, you will be notified.

Each confirmed registration must be accompanied by the full registration payment, completed Team Registration Form, a completed Team Roster and a Participant Registration & Waiver Form for each player. The individual Participant Registration & Waiver Form is now a requirement for anyone who participates in any activities at Portland Sports Complex, including team manager's and/or coaches. This waiver only needs to be completed once and its term is indefinite, unless withdrawn by the adult participant or a parent or guardian on behalf of a minor child. Please be sure to print one for each of your team members or have them download it and return it with your completed roster form on or before the first scheduled game. Participant's who have not returned a completed waiver will not be allowed to participate and/or play until a completed and signed waiver is returned to the facility management.

Why should youth soccer players register with Soccer Maine?
Portland Sports Complex is now a sanctioned facility by Soccer Maine. As of January 1, 2005, youth soccer players must be registered with Soccer Maine to receive the insurance benefits offered by the Soccer Maine Indoor Policy while playing in our facility. Soccer Maine Registration Forms can be easily downloaded from our website and must be sent directly to Soccer Maine with the required $10 player registration fee. Out of state teams that are registered within their own state organization must have an Authorization to Travel Form completed and do not have to pay the required registration fee to Soccer Maine in order to receive their own benefits. Please call your state organization if you have any questions about this.

This fee is set by Soccer Maine and is not connected with Portland Sports Complex. We DO NOT receive any portion of it. In fact, we are required to pay a per team fee to Soccer Maine and incur additional miscellaneous administrative costs in order to be recognized as a sanctioned facility and provide these additional benefits to the youth soccer players and coaches. Soccer Maine sanctioned facilities do not keep scores and/or standings for U11 and below. They also do not have playoffs in these divisions.

For more information about the details and benefits of playing in a sanctioned facility, please visit the Soccer Maine website or call them directly.
